The Battle of The Orcan Portal
Friday
night in Lumberton Shire produced a rather unfamiliar sight.
While the townsfolk gathered at the Mystic Highlander and the Fallen
Comrade to swap tales and share a drink with old friends, various denizens of
evil attempted to raid the town. The
oddity was that there were not only the customary Orcs and Fish men attacking,
but also a few groups of undead. This
occurrence did not go unnoticed, and several of the townsfolk wondered why such
creatures suddenly could be found in a virtually necromancer free land.
Later
that evening a large battle occured against Huntonno and his minions.
During this initial attack the town was repelled by Huntonno, several
powerful Orcs, and a Lich. The
battle was led by the town Garrison and several visitors from Therendry.
At the conclusion of the battle the Lich and Huntonno escaped through a
portal. The Garrison, reduced in
size due to the casualties during the battle, returned to town to lick their
wounds.
The
brave visitors from Therendry pressed on through the portal and were quickly
defeated by the masses of enemies that awaited them. Later, Field Marshal Urik and his men joined the Evendarrians
in an attempt to pass through the portal a second time, but found that it was no
longer where they had originally encountered it. The portal had either been destroyed or moved, leaving the
adventurers to wonder what had happened to Huntonno and the Lich.
Later,
as retired adventurers Dakota Ironbane and Falgar Shinglefoot scouted the
fringes of the Orcan Lowlands for signs of an attacking force, they encountered
Huntonno's party. Staying hidden,
the two watched where the group went and stayed long enough to see the start of
some sort of ritual. Immediately
the two ran to warn the townsfolk.
Field
Marshal Urik and his men were on watch at the Mystic Highlander when Dakota and
Falgar burst from the wood line shouting warning to the bystanders.
Immediately the Field Marshal assembled his force and followed Dakota to
where the two had left the horrid assembly of Orcs and Undead.
Upon
arriving at the location, Field Marshal Urik assembled the group and belted out
battle commands expertly. The
initial charge wiped out most of the Undead and left the clearing empty, except
for a swirling orb of light in its center.
Just when the group started to approach the light, a battle cry rose from
the darkness and a large contingency of Orcs attacked from the rear.
Near hysteria ensued and only the experience and veteran leadership of
the Garrison held things together for the townsfolk.
The attack was repulsed eventually leaving the gathered adventurers
wondering what would happen next.
As
Field Marshal Urik called his disheveled group back together, the true assault
ensued from the front of the clearing. From
the shadows beyond the swirling orb the Lich and Huntonno's elite guard tore
into the front ranks of Field Marshal Urik's force, inflicting casualties at a
rather impressive rate. Only the
efforts of Vala Gurth, Kane Lee, Garrett Starlon, and the other healers
accompanying the group kept many of the warriors alive.
Magic filled the air as the brave townspeople held off the initial
barrage and pulled together as a unit to stand against the far superior forces
of Huntonno.
During
all of this confusion Caption Seudor led a brilliantly successful flanking
maneuver with a small force of fleet‑footed Garrison members.
At a crucial moment he led his men into
the heart of the enemy force. Using
this distraction to their advantage, Field Marshal Urik, Sergeant Falgar, and a
noble Highlander from Therendry charged Huntonno
and slew him. This group
then charged the Lich to dispose of him.
Neither
Sergeant Falgar or Field Marshall Urik could harm the lich, but the Highlander's
magical weapon seemed to do substantial damage.
Their attack was effective until the Highlander was hit with Peranore's
Minor Binding, effectively eliminating him from the battle.
As the lich surveyed the battlefield, an unknown wizard came form nowhere
to end the battle with a few well placed spells.
In the aftermath of such a large confrontation was left only the swirling orb. After consultation with sage Lorik Blixar concerning its nature, Sergeant Falgar and Field Marshal Urik learned that the orb was in fact a portal which was forming on the spot. The two attacked it with repeated weapon blows causing it to collapse. Despite the fact that Falgar and Dakota both insist that there was a treasure box with the group, no such item was ever found.
